Tyrone Everett vs. Jose Lopez Poster 1975 |
|
|
Junior lightweight contender Tyrone Everett, of Philadelphia, knocked out Mexican veteran Jose Luis Lopez in four rounds March 11, 1975 at the Spectrum. This 22x28 mint poster is from the fight. Everett, a lefty, won his first 34 fights before being robbed of the WBC junior lightweight world title when judges from Philadelphia and San Juan voted for Puerto Rico's Alfredo Escalera after their 15-round title fight before a crowd of more than 16,000 fans on Nov. 30, 1976 at the Spectrum. The Mexican referee voted for Everett. Ringside observers gave five rounds to defending champ Escalera, who took his tarnished belt back to Puerto Rico. After two more wins, Everett was shot to death by his girlfriend on May 26, 1977. He was 24 years old.
